Inspiration
What inspired our project is one of our group members major injury. While participating in a sports activity, an accident led to his broken leg injury. It wasn’t until months later he was able to get back up on his feet and start being active again. Taking inspiration from this experience, we wanted to create an app that allows people to be motivated and assisted in exercising no matter the circumstances.
What it does
Our app helps people keep accountability in their exercises. It has a lot of different exercises that the user can choose from and the camera will catch their physical movement to track the exercise.
How we built it
We built it using XCode and split up tasks while efficiently keeping tabs on one another using GitHub
Challenges we ran into
This Hackathon is our groups first online Hackathon so we unsure of all the different possibilities there were. Since this hackathon wasn’t in person, we had to make sure we were communicating effectively. This was the biggest challenge as there were always scheduling conflicts. One of our group members were over 9000 miles away and we all had work and school that we had to attend to. It was difficult finding time to discuss our ideas and challenges we needed to overcome but we had to set aside time, even if it were just for 5 minutes.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Some accomplishments we’re proud of was actually learning the coding language. Since we are making an application on Mac, we used Swift. It was 2 of our group members first time coding using Swift. After working it out and spending a lot of time and dedication towards learning the interface and language itself, we were able to put the app together.
What we learned
On top of learning how to code using swig for the first time, things that we learned was major impact distance has on a group. Because it’s summer and there’s so many family, work, and school responsibilities, we had to make sure we had efficient time management. By constantly communicating between one another we were able to get our thoughts across, even if it was through a simple text. Ensuring our group members knew what was happening in everyone’s life was just as important as coding. It’s crucial to know what your team is juggling and the sacrifices they make to put aside time to contribute to the project. Our team learned how to overcome the scheduling conflicts and distance in order to reach our goal.
What's next for Proactive
In the short time span that we had for Proactive, we could only do so much out of the numerous ideas that we had for the app. Despite the hackathon ending, we will still continue to develop the app and improve it with every code. We plan to implement machine learning technology to track and improve the form of each individual exercising and expand our catalog of exercises. We are going to add more motivating features to the app so people can feel more inclined to exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
