Inspiration
Students at Rice often sell and buy from each other, but there’s no centralized platform. Advertisements can often be lost among other information and promotions, and it’s hard to find what you’re looking for or get rid of your stuff in a timely manner. By creating this pRice app for Rice students in which they can buy, advertise, and sell their stuff in one centralized location.
What it does
pRice connects sellers to buyers and allows interaction through the chat conversation to make the sell/buy used goods process easier. It is a straightforward layout for searching for used goods and endorses students to create a self-sustainable culture. We allow students to sell anything from textbooks to tickets, and couches to cookies!
How we built it
We used the class structures and buttons in the Android Studio program with java language to create the operations of this app.
Challenges we ran into
One of our teammate’s computer kept getting an error installing for Android Studio, which couldn't be resolved for the entire hackathon period. Thanks to HackRice12 Board for the time they spent helping us. So multiple people had to work on the same computer, but it actually helped us have better brainstorming, debugging, and problem-solving skills.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
None of us had ever created an app before, so the fact that we were able to create something, even with this simplicity, is something to be proud of. Also, one of our team members did not know any Java before HackRice12, but she was able to gain limited proficiency through this project.
What we learned
We gained familiarity with Android Studio and git hub repositories. We also learned how to use xml files and the “behind-the-scenes” code for basic app functions. We learned how to work well and collaborate with each other even though we did not know each other too well prior to the competition. We also gained experience on working on a single project for such a long consecutive time. It was a first for all of us.
What's next for pRice
As of now, our app would be unable to collect/create a User Database. We would want to expand its functionality so that it would actually be able to interact with users and store their preferences and respond to them. We also think it could be used for other community activities such as sharing/paying for rides and group orders or even finding roommates. We also think versions of this app could become useful for groups even outside Rice in the future, like in Houston neighborhoods, or other communities, in general.
