Inspiration

Women take their careers seriously, and sometimes that means staying late to get the job done. Our app aims to help women make informed decisions about their walks home by providing markers on the navigation map for crime data for the year 2017.

What it does

Our web app uses the Google Maps API and Google Maps Directions Service for navigation and street view, and the City of Chicago Data Portal for crime information. The crimes are color coded by the type of crime in the database.

How I built it

We used the google maps API with html5, css3, javascript and jquery.

Challenges I ran into

A lot of the elements didn't quite work at first, but we were able to figure it out eventually.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We basically built this entire app in under 6 hours. Sleep is important.

What I learned

Anyone can build something, given enough motivation!

What's next for PowerWalk

Future improvements include turning the app into a mobile app, so people could walk with the information in hand. Then, if they choose to avoid a street because of the crime data, then the Google Maps Directions API will reroute the navigation.
