Inspiration
You have leftover ingredients in your fridge and you don't know what to do with them. Some eggs, the spinach from yesterday's salad, and that can of garbanzo beans that your mom gave you a month ago. What in the world could you possibly make for dinner?
Good thing you have a sous (or should I say Pous) chef in your pocket that can recommend recipes to you!
What it does
Pous Chef is a Facebook Messenger chat bot. When you're feeling hungry but uninspired when it comes to recipes, pull out your assistant and ask it to find recipes you can make using the ingredients you have.
You can provide the ingredients you have in natural language and Pous Chef will find relevant recipes, giving you back a picture + link to the suggested recipe within seconds.
How we built it
We built Pous Chef using the Facebook Messenger Platform. The backend was written in node.js. We also made use of the Spoonacular Food API for searching for recipes and parsing ingredients from natural language.
Challenges we ran into
No one on the team had used the Messenger Platform before, so it took us some time to get familiar with it and get an initial version working.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Not only does Pous Chef find you recipes, but it is also Pusheen themed! = ^. .^ = Also, sending it any Pusheen sticker always gives you a recipe for cat food back
What we learned
We learned node.js, Messenger Platform, and that Pusheen is adorbs <3
What's next for Pous Chef
In the future we want to be able to order groceries from Pous Chef as well! Think automatic order placements on Amazon Fresh, Google Express, or Postmates.
