Inspiration
We were inspired by Easter Egg Hunts and the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter's eleventh birthday! Wanting to combine custom art assets and our desire to learn with the Hololens Potions Pop! was born!
What it does
After scanning the room ingredients will pop into existence around you and a cauldron will be on the ground. You need to find the ingredients and combine them into a potion to save the town!
How we built it
We used Unity as our game engine with heavy assistance from the HoloToolKit. Additionally we used tutorials, documentation, and advice from Microsoft Evangelists to finish this fun game. The art was the game was created with Autodesk Maya, Audacity, and Substance Painter 2.
Challenges we ran into
Although much of the team had experience developing on the Hololens we bit off more than we could chew with creating our own custom spatial mapping solution within the 24hrs deadline. Instead we scan the room and simply created a collider for the floor. Rather than have the ingredients spawn throughout the room we changed it so they float in bubbles around the user and only have gravity activated once they are turned on.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of making a game at the Philly HoloHack while other teams focused more serious endeavors and we kept it fun for all audiences! Combining great art and programming we are excited to show off Potion Pop! to the world.
What we learned
We learned about hitting minimal viable product as quickly as possible so we can decide to pivot if necessary as well as further our skills on developing for the Hololens. Our knowledge of the Spatial Mapping on the Hololens was expanded as well as working across a cross-discipline.
What's next for Potion Pop!
We go back to college, our jobs, and get a little sleep! Some of us will continue working with the Hololens while others will further their game development skills!
