Ugh! I sighed in disgust as I walked to school, seeing all the plastic bags hanging on trees, the chemical runoff in my backyard stream, all the things that are polluting my environment. However, apart from disgust, I shed an angry tear. Why does nobody ever focus on the environment, and why does the government not help, despite it being the richest in the state? A realization then crept to me, the fact that our community is not full of bad people, but rather those who can not report it effectively. I then took a step back and identified many reporting platforms. All of them are either state or country-centric, with nothing readily and easily available locally within my county. Therefore, I jumped on my laptop, and began typing away! I started by having a page where users can submit reports of pollution incidents they encounter. Along with an interactive map to pinpoint the location, I incorporated many text boxes to describe the pollution. When it is submitted, Supabase, an online database processes the request, and spits out the reports in a separate page, where other users can see. They can add comments to provide further updates on the pollution site, and to ask clarifying questions. There is an upvote feature also available so that better scoring reports are prioritized. This website helps my whole community, not only those who care for their environment but do not have an effective way of reporting it, but also incentivizing those to look around and observe their environment, so that they know that they can report it and make a change to the community. This app unites our county and strengthens the environment. Although this is just a prototype, I still feel that it has potential to make an impact on my community and benefits the environment for the long run.
