Inspiration

As we all know, the world is already experiencing climate change & it may be the biggest problem facing humanity today.

Speaking about our project, after listening to serious stories about the problem of air pollution in cities like Delhi & Beijing where reports of bottles of fresh air being sold motivated us to work on combating air pollution.

What it does

Our website allows you to enter your city name & it tells you the current Air Quality Index (AQI) of your city.

Based on this data, it tells you the measures the residents need to take to combat air pollution in your area

How we built it

We used various technologies like HTML, CSS, JS, React & others for designing the front-end part of our website. Along with that, we used node.js & express.js for designing the back end-part. For fetching the AQI data, we used an api from aqicn.org

Challenges we ran into

We were able to use the aqicn api to fetch AQI data of the cities in a separate html file. But we found it difficult to integrate it with our main website. Ultimately, we were able to resolve this issue. Also, some of the other problems we encountered were the usage of the right CSS for the drop-down menu in the levels button. One additional challenge we faced was the integration of the Razorpay API for our donation page.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Firstly, we're extremely proud of the fact that we're contributing, however small our contribution may be, to help solve the dangerous problem of pollution & climate change. Secondly, we're happy to state that we've been able to build a fully functional website just within a span of 2 days, which has great animations & uses API integrations effectively to solve the given problems

What we learned

We learnt that participating in hackathons is one of, if not the best way to remember & strengthen your understanding of web development. We also learnt that it is useful to know at least the basics of the technologies that your teammates are using so that it becomes easier to integrate your team-mate's code whenever they update it.

What’s next for Pollert

We would like to make our website even more useful by adding stats that show how pollution levels are changing over time & how donations from our users have been used to combat air pollution in their area.
