Inspiration
Upon seeing the shocking statistics of food waste, such as the 92 billion pounds of food wasted annually, we knew we had to come up with a solution. We were greatly inspired by the work that food banks do to provide meals to our communities. It further motivated us to create Points4Plates, hoping to increase donations to those food banks.
What it does
Points4Plates is a website designed to reduce food waste by connecting donors, such as restaurants, businesses, and households, to local food banks. Our website allows users to easily donate excess food, earning points for their contributions. Donors are recognized for their efforts through a leaderboard, encouraging friendly competition and ongoing support. By redirecting unused food to those in need, Points4Plates helps reduce waste, support food banks, and make a positive impact on communities.
How we built it
The backend was built with nodejs, while the frontend was html, css and javascript. We used firebase as our database.
Challenges we ran into
- We were forced to change site providers mutiple times
- We ran into a lot of bugs
- We had some problems with firebase
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully made a full stack website that is able to keep track of data
What we learned
We learned that integrating databases into our full stack websites were very painful.
What's next for Points4Plates
We are going to scale our website to cover more areas other than the greater Seattle. We also would like to implement verification systems into our donation page.
