Inspiration
what inspired me was the meeting we had before the hackathon starts, it actually moved me as we keep seeing the Ai growth but I didn't see poetry grow with it at all, so I've decided to change this and help develop poetry even by a little bit by making my own poems translator that lets you experience poems from different languages and cultures with the same feel people do with their own language
What it does
It detects the poem, then uses a Gemini API to auto translate the poem but with changing the format of the text to keep the same meaning and the rhythm too!! and also giving you a background on the author of the poem and the background he lived in to make it.
How we built it
I used React, Vite, Tailwind CSS for the front end, Express 5, Google Gemini for the main API, and pnpm workspaces for the monorepo
Challenges we ran into
the API key kept running into an issue in which it said that the free limit is finished even when it was the first time using it, it caused me an issue for like 3 hours to solve until I decided to change the version of Gemini I use and then it suddenly worked !!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
bridging different cultures together by breaking the language barrier and sharing different opinions in poetry to help bring back this old art back to life
What we learned
it was the first time for me using the Gemini API and it was definitely a new experience
What's next for Poem Lens
using text to speech features so that we can hear how the poems are pronounced in different languages and also expanding the number of languages to translate from and to
