Podium

Inspiration

Many computer science students and professionals are naturally introverted, which can create significant barriers during job interviews where communication skills are crucial. We recognized this common struggle and set out to build a solution. What started as a tool for CS enthusiasts quickly evolved into something much broader—a comprehensive interview preparation platform that could benefit job seekers across all industries and experience levels.

What it does

Podium is an AI-powered interview practice platform that provides personalized, realistic interview preparation:

  • Dynamic Question Generation: Creates tailored interview questions based on the user's target company, specific position, and experience level
  • Interactive Practice Sessions: Records users as they answer questions in real-time, simulating actual interview conditions
  • Comprehensive AI Evaluation: Analyzes both audio and visual components of responses, evaluating content quality, confidence levels, body language, and overall presentation
  • Actionable Feedback: Provides detailed scoring and constructive feedback to help users improve their interview performance

How we built it

Frontend: TypeScript with React and Tailwind CSS for a clean, responsive user interface

Backend: Node.js with JavaScript for robust server-side processing and API management

AI Integration: Gemini API for intelligent question generation and multi-modal response analysis

Challenges we ran into

  • Video Processing Complexity: Struggled with properly encoding and formatting video data in base64 for seamless Gemini API integration
  • API Rate Limiting: Navigated Gemini API token restrictions while maintaining smooth user experience
  • Full-Stack Integration: Overcame various connectivity issues between frontend and backend systems
  • Real-time Processing: Optimized video and audio processing for responsive feedback delivery

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Universal Scalability: Built a platform that adapts to any job role, industry, and experience level—from entry-level positions to executive roles
  • Production-Ready Architecture: Developed a fully deployable solution that can be hosted independently, making it accessible for widespread use
  • Multi-Modal AI Analysis: Successfully integrated advanced AI capabilities that evaluate both verbal and non-verbal communication
  • User-Centric Design: Created an intuitive interface that reduces anxiety around interview preparation

What we learned

  • Advanced API Integration: Gained deep experience with Gemini's capabilities and learned to optimize multi-modal AI interactions
  • Team Collaboration: Developed stronger skills in version control, conflict resolution, and collaborative development workflows
  • Full-Stack Development: Enhanced our understanding of seamless frontend-backend integration
  • Problem-Solving Under Pressure: Learned to rapidly iterate and troubleshoot complex technical challenges in a hackathon environment

What's next for Podium

The potential of this project exceeded our initial expectations. Moving forward, we see several exciting possibilities:

  • Commercialization Path: The platform demonstrates clear market value and could be developed into a sustainable SaaS product
  • Open Source Community: We're considering open-sourcing the project to foster learning and collaboration within the developer community
  • Feature Expansion: Plans to add industry-specific question banks, team interview simulations, and integration with popular job platforms
  • Enhanced AI Capabilities: Exploring more sophisticated feedback mechanisms and personalized learning paths

Podium represents not just a hackathon project, but a scalable solution to a real-world problem that affects millions of job seekers globally.
