Introduction

Plumbum is the prototype of a mental health-focused app that helps users to externalize, visualize, and work through their feelings in a calming atmosphere. By navigating our mascot blob Plumb's moods, the user can also develop healthy habits for coping with their own emotions.

Inspiration

Mental health can sometimes be daunting to talk about, and emotions can be hard to deal with. But what if we could represent a scary and stigmatized struggle with a harmless blob? By no means do I intend to downplay the problems that many people face regarding mental health, but I hope Plumb can help some.

I am by no means a psychologist or mental health expert or a professional by any means, really. But I've always found it easier to deal with my own mental health by giving it at least a little space, if not respect, so I can try to understand and work through it. I've found visualization is also a pretty common tool in therapy for handling emotions. Thus, Plumb!

Plumbum was a word I remembered while trying to think of other words that felt like 'blob'. It's the Latin word for lead, hence why the element is called Pb on the periodic table. And though I definitely don't endorse lead products as a treatment for any health concerns, I hope that you will give Plumbum a try. If nothing else, we get the excellent bilingual pun in our tagline: "Leading each other to a better future".

Features

Plumbum's loading screen contains options for the user to choose which of Plumb's moods most closely matches their own. On every page, there is also a 'panic button' that allowers users in crisis to connect with hotlines and more urgent mental health resources.

After users have selected Plumb's mood for the day, they then arrive at Plumb's activity menu. There are six activities total, described below.

Explore

Walk, fly, or swim around with Plumb through natural landscapes, seascapes, and even a small galaxy! Discover fun facts about the world we live in and collect items for Plumb's room!

Spend Time

Sometimes quality time is all you need. Set a timer and a background and watch fireworks, waves, or a sunset together! Time spent doing nothing is also time earned towards special rewards!

Plumb's Room

Hang out in a nicer room than the teal void! Make some paper airplanes or decorate Plumb's room in a style you'll both enjoy.

Journaling

Write out whatever's on your mind in your journal. You'll be able to export your entries if you want, or you can leave them with Plumb!

The Void

Crumpled papers, beach balls, and more for when you just need to get the itches and tingles out. Throw whatever you want into the void-- except maybe not Plumb!

Canvas

Unleash your inner artist, or just make some scribbles. (Plumb's a pretty easy model, too!) You can also export anything you'd like from the Canvas.

How we built it

Plumbum and Plumb were designed and animated using Procreate.

What's next for Plumbum

Currently, Plumbum is in the early design stages with no UI/UX or coded behavior. When more of the app's design and functionality is finalized, we will move on to development and testing.
