WE ARE BEGINNERS

Inspiration

Despite being on a tight budget, we have always had an outside interest in fashion. And as consumerism and the media continued to rise, we came to see that, despite the constant promotion of fast fashion, it was something we could no longer support. We wanted to delve deeper into the details of what makes certain clothing non-sustainable, even though we did have a background in both fashion and the environment. To achieve this, we decided to build a website that provides information on the materials used in the products you want to buy as well as links to websites that offer eco-friendly alternatives.

What we learned

We learned the fundamentals of HTML, which is used to create websites, as well as conventions and the fundamentals of CSS styling. However, we acquired skills beyond coding, like debugging and troubleshooting. Additionally, we learned how to make the most of our resources and fully utilize the internet.

How we built it

Our website's foundation was built with Replit, and when we finished the homepage, we had to dive deeply into W3 Schools to learn how to add pages, buttons, and other elements. We went through a lot of trial and error when adding these features because we were interested in showcasing our prototype through a demo. In the end, we decided to use an input type submit function to show what would essentially happen if we wanted to use this site to check how sustainable or unsustainable a piece of clothing is. After completing this demo, we made the decision to attempt utilizing CSS to alter the website's appearance.

Challenges we ran into

Since my partner and I are newbies and lack coding skills, it was a little intimidating to really learn how to create a website from scratch using languages like HTML and CSS. We had no idea about classes or functions, so after we had a structure for our website, it was challenging to really add features like buttons and pages. We first considered making a website on Google Sites and simply embedding it into our own website while we were searching for a way to show what we wanted our prototype to look like. However, we ultimately decided to try and code that in HTML with the assistance of W3 schools because we wanted to create something that looked like a search engine. We first developed this using HTML, and after a lot of trial and error, we produced a demo of what this would look like on our website with the use of input submit function. After constructing the project's basic framework, we discovered that style could only be added with the use of CSS, a different language. We encountered formatting and syntactic problems because this was a language we were unfamiliar with.
