Official PITCH-HER! Gameplay Found Here
Inspiration
- Managers frequently cite in research that they feel underprepared to develop effective communication in their team. Managers have also discussed feeling underprepared themselves to lead as well particularly when they did not anticipate being in such leadership positions.
- From our personal experiences as being the ones organizing leadership training workshops and participating in them, we noticed a few issues:
2a. As an organizer, it is very hard to brainstorm new, unique ideas.
2b. It is difficult to keep groups engaged, especially with decreasing attention span and differing interests.
2c. As a participant, corporate leadership training events sometimes doesn't feel meaningful as my experiences have consist a lot of sitting and awkwardness.
What problems are we trying to solve with Pitch-HER?
- Hard to brainstorm new ideas for corporate events --> we hope that the intuitive and fast-paced rules of our game make it reliable and a go-to choice for your next one!
- Decrease the typical length employees spent completing corporate leadership training tools (e.g., hours spent in workshops) by developing a fast-paced game that takes minutes to complete.
- Increase employee engagement with corporate leadership training tools by developing a game that ensures all players have an active role as the customer and pitcher.
- Deliver high value in training new generations of leaders in a short amount of time:
4a. Players must try to convince the customers to put more $ towards them --> increases ability of employees to think about their end users' needs
4b. Players must use 5 wacky objects to solve an "unrelated" customer problem --> creative problem solving
4c. Great way for intimate networking opportunities! --> after your team plays our game, they will be sure to have new friends and fond memories to bring up the next time they see each other again.
How we built it
HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and with love.
Why we believe in Pitch-HERβ€οΈ
Because we had so much fun making it and we hope you have just as much playing it! We are proud of ourselves of being able to create something from scratch and keeping something as complex as a game simple.
Challenges we ran into
- Figuring out how to display the 5 object pictures horizontally rather vertically using HTML
- Figuring out which programming language would be best to approach creating such a game. It took us a long time to decide that we were going to use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript as we were set on using Python at first.
- Website prototyping, and user journey mapping is so much harder than we thought.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It was everyone's first time at a hackathon, and using any of the programming languages. Despite these challenges, we were still able to brainstorm a cool idea (personally, the hardest part!) and finished product without needing to code for 36 hours straight- yay health!
What we learned
We all learned something new!
Queena:
- Game rule creation
- Website prototyping
- User journey map (way harder website/game wireframing
- To not underestimate time it takes to prepare Devpost submission.
Nehchal:
- How to convert abstract ideas into real-life solutions that have applicability to current social contexts.
- How to innovate projects using new programming languages.
- Trying to build something from scratch (no matter the time allotted) is challenging. The time it takes to ideate and plan ahead should not be underestimated.
Ola:
- How to collaboratively problem solve with a programming language that we have not used before, especially needing to adapt after realizing original plan was not feasible anymore.
- Importance of asking for help, and also learned which types of questions to ask that will get us an answer that will be helpful to us.
- Importance of sleep and energy (food) when doing a mentally challenging project like a hackathon.
What's next for Pitch-HER!
- Integrate Zoom or video conferencing platforms into our game so that players can fully play online and see each other.
- Implement game psychology and further promote leadership building skills by putting in additional levels that increase difficulty of game
- Expansion pack - pitchers can team up and pitch together!
- Improve functionality:
4a. Reducing amount of clicks that users have to make when navigating the game.
4b. Program and import graphics we made on Canva into our website.
4c. Ensure that the graphics are also functional as our draft model is currently.
