Inspiration
The First Insight Challenge with inspiration from interactive apps with good user interface such as Pinterest and Tinder
What it does
Pinder is a mobile and web app that collects user data in the form of a game. Players choose categories of real products based on their personal interests and are asked to guess the price of each item. They are awarded points based on how close their estimate was to the actual price which in the end of the session can be used to acquire product discounts. After the game they are asked to rate each item on a scale of love it to hate it and are able to provide feedback and add items to their cart for purchase. Pinder works because it combines incentive with personal interest while at the same time helping companies collect needed information.
How we built it
We used a bare bones bootstrap template to help us get started. In developing our app, we looked at two popular social media platforms and tried to integrate them into an interactive and user-friendly game that people would want to play. We used Firebase to host our app and store server side data.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was trying to figure out how to use Firebase's authentication. We didn't have enough time to actually figure out and implement this portion of our app, so we created our own sign-in test.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to produce a finished product that has proper functionality and is user friendly. At many points throughout the hackathon we were worried that we would have missing key components, however, we were able to successfully design and develop a working prototype of a game that's not only comprehensible but also engaging.
What we learned
We learned a lot about Firebase, and about how to develop applications that are actually user friendly. We learned about how to collaborate as a team made of members with different skill sets and how to come together to create a unified application.
What's next for Pinder
We hope to develop more of the features that we hoped to implement by the end of the hackathon. We hope to successfully integrate Pinterest by using it for authentication and to give the app a more personal experience.
