Inspiration

A lot of females around the globe struggle with selecting the correct birth control pill. This leads to unbearable side effects and also hazardous consequences. So we decided to build a platform that will suggest to you the best birth control pill which will cater to your needs.

What it does

Pills.io is a web app helping women find the right contraceptive pill. It currently collects data from drugs.com and allows users to gather information using the fields: User Reviews, Drug Interactions, Drug Effectiveness.

How we built it

The front-end was built using HTML, CSS, JS, and Bootstrap. The data was scraped from drugs.com and WebMD using Beautiful Soup web-scraper. We also made the prototype using Figma.

Challenges we ran into

I had never built a website before, even though I was focusing on building bots using Python. Which is why the project turned out to be an interesting learning experience. I had to figure out how we would connect the data scraped from the sites to a database as well as a whole other page load with all of our products. These pages were kindly created by my team-mate Shubham

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am very pleased with the site's design. The typography matches the mock-up I provided, and I am glad the team decided to stick with an aesthetic UI instead of taking the route of including lot numbers and manufacturers. Given it is our first attempt at web development, I cannot be more satisfied with what we have created. It was also challenging for us to scrape and connect the data as we ran into some CORS errors. We overcame that as well due to our sheer determination. I am really proud of what my team was able to pull in the last two days.

What we learned

We learned how to use version control software, specifically Git and GitHub. We also learned the basics of Figma designing and connecting DBs to the frontend and scraping data.

What's next for Pills.io

We believe that the pill information currently offered by the conventional online market is limited. We want to improve upon this by providing more detailed and accurate results. We are planning to add a few more data sources, like PubMed. Will be able to benefit pharma companies, doctors, and other medical professionals who want to use the platform as their resources.
