Inspiration
Gen Z takes an average of 7,300 photos per year. We all know that one friend who's always behind the camera, capturing the perfect moments but never making it into the photos themselves. And when you try to share memories, they’re scattered across phones, chats, and drives, creating a frustrating experience. 50% of people report losing memories because photos are scattered across multiple platforms.
What it does
PicSwap turns your photos into collectible memory cards you swipe to trade one‑to‑one with friends, complete with watermarked previews and screenshot prevention. It makes sharing effortless, so everyone can contribute and be part of the memories, without the hassle of messy links or cloud drives.
How we built it
Jake Gimmy, a Life Sciences student with 0 prior coding experience, used Cursor to build a fully functional mobile app in Expo Go with JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
Jake was new to GitHub and had never set up a repo before, so getting started took extra time. Learning the basics of version control and development was a challenge, but it helped the team collaborate much more smoothly going forward.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
With the help of Cursor, Jake built a complete working mobile app, including JWT authentication, a Node.js backend, a native React frontend, screenshot prevention, and a SQL database, all without writing a single line of code himself and without any other experienced developer stepping in and coding.
What we learned
Vibe coding is next-level. It’s amazing how someone like Jake, with no prior coding knowledge, was able to pull off building an entire app. This shows just how accessible development can be when you leverage AI tools; it’s a game-changer for both beginners and experienced developers alike.
What's next for PicSwap
Next, we plan to roll out features like real-time notifications, smarter image sharing, and group albums to enhance the user experience. On the business side, we’re focusing on scaling the application, optimizing performance, and exploring new monetization opportunities. Our goal is to expand PicSwap’s reach and make it the go-to app for effortless photo sharing.
