Inspiration

During my job hunt, asking for referrals was an awkward and tedious 7-step process.

I would go through each of my LinkedIn connections, scroll through their experience and education to see if I had worked with them or gone to school with them, click on their current company, navigate to the company’s jobs page, search for the role I was interested in, and draft a message asking for a referral if a relevant position was open.

And in the worst case, I could have gone through all of my connections only to find that none of them work at a company with active job openings for the role I'm seeking. Not ideal.

What it does

Pico analyzes your LinkedIn connections, finds job openings at their companies, and writes personalized referral messages.

How we built it

I executed the project in phases:

• Phase 1: live landing page with waitlist
• Phase 2: design + develop main user journey
• Phase 3: develop, implement, and integrate the backend

These are the technologies/skills I used:

• Frontend: React, Typescript, Vite, Tailwind.css
• Backend: Python, LLM (Gemini), Flask for API endpoints.
• Design: I drew inspiration from basement.studio (brand designers for Vercel)
• Tools: bolt.new to design the landing page, Netlify for continuous deployments, Cursor IDE

Challenges we ran into

• Pivoted product idea mid-hackathon
• Designing backend architecture
• Server side routing issue
• CORS...

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Before pivot: 1 user sign up, after pivot: 15+ sign ups.
• First user interview with real feedback (actually sparked the pivot!)
• Fully functional SPA running with Bolt.new in less than 5 minutes.

What we learned

• Personas can make your AI agent more effective
• You don't need a full-feature product for people to be interested
• Asking Cursor for the simplest plan for a feature, and to break it into digestible action items is effective

What's next for Pico

I've already deployed a waitlist (e.g., picoai.io/waitlist) with 15+ people signed up. I've been marketing on LinkedIn 1. I'm also offering a limited time offer, a free lifetime subscription for the first 25 users that sign up, give feedback, and leave a testimonial. After the first 25 users are interviewed and selected, I'm doing a closed beta for 3 months.
