Inspiration
Recognizing how fast the digital world is changing and how it can leave older generations behind in terms of digital literacy motivated us to create a tool to help them avoid falling victim to digital attacks that may take advantage of them. We chose to focus on phishing scams because of the alarming statistics on elder fraud and to bring awareness to the issue.
What it does
PhishPhree is a Chrome extension that walks a user through a series of questions to help them detect a phishing attack when attempting to log in to a banking application.
How we built it
We used HTML and CSS to build a Chrome extension.
Challenges we ran into
We wanted to have the extension automatically popup when it detects a banking website. We also failed to figure out how to close the extension on command.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We made a functional Chrome extension and gained more experience in using Git and HTML.
What we learned
- using GitHub in a team setting
- combining HTML and CSS
- how surprisingly simple making a Chrome extension is
What's next for phishphree
Ideally the extension would have more questions to cover a larger number of potential fraud cases as well as adding the functionality we failed to in our 24 hour period.
