Inspiration
When the question "What do you want to do?" is brought up among friends, we're often met with "I don't know" or "I'm fine with whatever." Time is wasted on figuring out the next best food spot or the most optimal route. Rather than searching on Google "things to do near UCI" Petr Adventr is here to do the work for you and more. We were hoping to create a site that not only scopes spots near campus but creates an efficient and appealing route/itinerary for the day. As college students, we often find ourselves spontaneously hanging out with one another–sometimes late at night!--so why not have a website that caters to that lifestyle?
What it does
Petr Adventr creates an itinerary for the user based on their interests and the number of activities they want to do that day.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and Javascript to code the frontend, and Python and Flask to build the backend.
Challenges we ran into
- Unfamiliarity with the language and conventions of HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
- Before connecting to the frontend, trying to figure out the types of inputs we would receive from frontend
- Once we did connect to frontend, altering our code so that it works with the requests we did receive and accounting for user input + handling unexpected input
- Figuring out how to host a backend server without coming across any issues
- Learning the capabilities of the Google and Yelp APIs
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We’re proud of our ability to persevere and finish the project especially when there were times when we were running into issues for hours at a time and felt like giving up.
- Being able to work together as a team effectively and carry out our project design that we had come up with at the beginning of the hackathon.
- As this was the first time any of us were working with web development we had to learn decent bits of HTML/CSS and even some Javascript in a short amount of time to complete our project.
What we learned
- The nuances of web development, but also realizing just how customizable it can be, all through coding
- How to use the Google and Yelp APIs
- Flask
What's next for Petr Adventr
Eventually, we would like to include a map on the website to show users the route of the itinerary and a day calendar to visualize the time blocks. Also, the starting point for all trips is currently Aldrich Hall, but we would like to add a feature for the user to add their own origin point.
