Inspiration

The pandemic severely disrupted children's education and mental health. Many kids, especially those with attention challenges, have fallen behind in foundational subjects like reading, writing, and math. Beyond academics, isolation and anxiety are at an all-time high. Traditional tools like tutoring apps or school counselors aren’t accessible daily or don’t engage kids well. We were inspired to build Peppy, an AI-powered digital friend that supports children both emotionally and academically — every single day.

What it does

Peppy is a personalized AI companion for children aged 7–15. It helps them:

Take class notes via audio input Summarize lessons and explain them in simple, friendly terms Assist with homework and daily academic review Provide emotional check-ins and encouragement Coach social-emotional skills, like making friends and managing stress It adapts to the child’s learning style and becomes a trusted, safe friend that helps them grow — academically and emotionally.

How we built it

We used a combination of: Speech-to-text APIs to enable Peppy to listen and transcribe classroom audio Natural language processing (NLP) to simplify lecture content into digestible summaries Sentiment analysis to detect emotional states during daily check-ins Conversational AI frameworks to create a warm, engaging, kid-friendly interaction style A parent-monitored interface with customization options for learning goals and emotional needs

Challenges we ran into

Designing a safe yet engaging interface for kids that also reassures parents Ensuring real-time note-taking accuracy in noisy classroom environments Balancing educational support with emotional coaching — getting the tone right was crucial Building a product that kids see as a friend, not another school app Making the AI relatable and age-appropriate across a wide age range (7–15)

Successfully built a working demo where Peppy listens to a class snippet and produces helpful notes Designed daily emotional check-ins that are friendly, empathetic, and aligned with child psychology best practices Created a holistic tool — not just academic or emotional, but both, in one seamless experience Positive feedback from parents and educators who saw the potential for real impact

What we learned

Kids engage best when technology feels like a relationship, not a task Emotional intelligence in AI is just as important as technical intelligence — tone, empathy, and personality matter There’s a real gap in tools designed for everyday, real-time classroom use Listening to parents and teachers early on helped shape a more meaningful product

What's next for Peppy Demo

Add multilingual support for ESL families as well as sign languages Partner with schools and pediatric mental health experts to refine content and emotional coaching.
