Inspiration
Our inspiration stemmed from witnessing the challenges faced by individuals with diverse communication needs, particularly those with low vision. Seeing the gaps in accessibility and communication, we felt compelled to contribute to creating solutions that empower and include everyone in society.
What it does
The project is a comprehensive platform aimed at enhancing communication and accessibility for individuals with diverse needs. It consists of four key features:
RetinaVision: An object detection system that utilizes computer vision to identify objects in the environment and provides information about them through voice communication. This feature assists individuals with visual impairments in navigating their surroundings independently.
SignHand: A sign language detection tool that interprets sign language gestures through camera input, facilitating communication between sign language users and non-users. This feature promotes inclusivity and enables seamless interaction between individuals who use sign language and those who do not.
MuteTalk: A text-to-voice generator designed to assist those who prefer or need to communicate through voice but may face challenges in doing so. MuteTalk converts text input into spoken words, enabling smooth conversations for individuals who may have difficulty speaking.
SignAR: A real-time text-to-augmented reality (AR) generator that transforms typed text into augmented reality representations of sign language hands. SignAR provides a visual representation of sign language gestures corresponding to the entered text, enhancing communication for individuals who use sign language.
How we built it
The project was built through a combination of research, prototyping, and iterative development. We utilized a range of technologies, including computer vision, natural language processing, and augmented reality, to create diverse features catering to various communication needs. User feedback played a pivotal role in refining and improving the project over time.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was ensuring the accessibility and usability of the project for all users. Balancing technical complexity with intuitive design was often a delicate task. Additionally, navigating ethical considerations, such as privacy and consent, posed significant challenges that required careful consideration and implementation strategies. Despite these challenges, the journey was rewarding, and each obstacle provided an opportunity for growth and innovation.
