Inspiration
Our inspiration was our own pets, and how we both ended up taking them home, and how they make us happy. We wanted to expand that happiness by creating a website that inspires others to adopt safely.
What it does
PawFinder spreads awareness about the adoption process and helps users find a breed that is suitable to their lifestyle.
How we built it
The frontend was built with CSS, HTML, and JavaScript. The backend was built using the micro web framework Flask and Python.
Challenges we ran into
Originally, we wanted to use a Petfinder API to link local adoption shelters with real animals that needed adopting; however, the site(s) that we wanted to use were not sending API keys in time. So instead, we had to use a Dog and Cat API that generated information about dog and cat breeds. While that changed the formatting of our website, we were still able to connect our purpose for the website by linking the adoption sites under Adopt Safely.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're very proud of finishing it in time, learning more about GitHub (we can now push, add, commit, pull, and checkout by memory), and collaborating together by using our unique skill sets.
What we learned
Teamwork makes the dream work.
What's next for PawFinder
Having real local animals on our website would be the next big step; because of the time constraints of the Hackathon, we were unable to get the website's API we wanted, but hopefully we will be able to get that so we can link that API to our program.
