Inspiration

Dr. Kollek's presentation at the opening ceremony opened our eyes to the reality of emergency rooms in Canada. Out of the many sponsor presentations it wasn't the most flashy, or eye catching, yet it seemed to be one of the more impactful ones. The utility, challenge and the fact that we would be contributing to society, was what inspired us to go down this path.

What it does

Patiently gives ER patients real-time wait times, live occupancy maps, an AI powered virtual chat bot to help you with all your needs during the waiting process. This helps determine whether switching hospitals will save time or not.

How we built it

We built the Patiently using Python and Flask for the backend, handling HTTP requests and database interactions with SQLAlchemy. The frontend leverages React for dynamic user interfaces. We integrated Auth0 for secure authentication.

Challenges we ran into

Our main challenges included tackling model overfitting, seamlessly integrating the API with Flask, and setting up authentication to ensure secure and efficient user access. Each hurdle pushed us to adapt quickly and think creatively under pressure.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

With Patiently we are proud that we are contributing to the healthcare sector, to make the regular person's hospital experience better, while striving to make the ER a more a efficient place.

What we learned

McHacks12 has taught us to work with others, how to separate tasks and properly conceptualize. Through these 24 hours we have also learned to work under a deadline and manage our time and our efforts efficiently.

What's next for Patiently

Patiently is not just any hackathon project, it is an idea that can be scaled and improved upon to significantly improve the patient's ER experience. We look forward to expand on Patiently and to make it an integral part of every emergency room in not only the province but the whole country.
