Students often know they should cold email, apply to jobs, and schedule coffee chats—but the process feels intimidating, unstructured, and overwhelming. We wanted to create a simple tool that makes these early career steps easier, more organized, and more motivating. PathUP was born from the idea that small actions, done consistently, build toward real opportunities.

PathUP turns essential career tasks—like cold emailing, job applications, and coffee chats—into clear, trackable projects. Users can:

  • Choose a project (e.g., Cold Emailing, Job Applications, Coffee Chats)
  • Complete guided micro-tasks
  • Earn XP for every step
  • Track their progress visually alongside their friends The goal is to make career development feel approachable, structured, and fun.

We designed PathUP entirely in Figma and Figma Make, focusing on mobile-first UX to keep interactions simple and intuitive. Our work included:

  • Creating screens for onboarding, project selection, and task progression
  • Designing a consistent visual system (colors, icons, spacing, card components)
  • Prototyping realistic user flows such as completing tasks and earning XP
  • Our goal was to make the UI feel fun, motivating, and beginner-friendly—without relying on full simulations or code.

Some of the biggest challenges we ran into while designing PathUP included:

  • Balancing a playful theme with a professional career-oriented tone
  • Designing UI that feels polished despite limited time
  • Making the XP system feel rewarding but not “gamey”
  • Ensuring the app can be realistically built using simple backend logic
  • Organizing multiple task types without overwhelming first-time users
  • Becoming familiar with the software and balancing UX along with UI

Our biggest accomplishments throughout this project include:

  • Creating a clear, cohesive mobile design in a short timeframe with no prior experience with Figma
  • Building an XP-based task system that feels intuitive and motivating
  • Designing a UI that simplifies intimidating tasks like cold emailing
  • Turning an abstract idea into a structured, functional prototype
  • Making a career tool that’s actually friendly and accessible for students

Throughout the project, there were a variety of challenges that taught us valuable lessons. For example,

  • How small UX decisions (spacing, hierarchy, colour contrast) dramatically affect clarity
  • How to design around constraints—time, scope, and technical abilities
  • How to simplify complex workflows like job searching into digestible steps
  • The importance of making professional tools approachable, not overwhelming

In terms of next steps for PathUP, this is what we have in mind:

  • Add personalization based on degree, career interests, and skill goals
  • Generate task recommendations based on user progress (e.g., “Send 2 more emails to unlock a new badge”)
  • Integrate templates for cold emails, follow-ups, and coffee chat outreach
  • Add more project types like resume reviews, portfolio improvements, or course exploration
