Inspiration
We followed the Diversity and Inclusion Track. Too many people run into the issue of not knowing where to proceed in their lives after high school. Often, there's a stigma against not following the traditional four-year college pathway. We built a website aiming to promote "inclusion" by spreading awareness about the "diverse" alternate career opportunities and pathways available for those who cannot, or choose not to attend a four-year university.
What it does
Spreads awareness on educational alternatives and opportunities.
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and collaborated through VS Code LiveShare.
Challenges we ran into
None of us knew any HTML, CSS or JavaScript in the morning. Somehow, we had a responsive website by the evening.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud to have been able to learn HTML/CSS on the fly. But our team's crowning achievement is setting up a server to host the website on a Raspberry Pi computer. It came to us out of nowhere - we were talking about how Professor Knight was running a website off of his own Raspberry Pi and we decided we had to try it for ourselves. Coincidentally we had MicroSD cards, a reader, and a spare Raspberry Pi laying around. Three hours later we'd somehow set up a server on UCR's Wi-Fi and our website is now proudly running on 10.13.232.218. Try it out.
What we learned
We learned a lot about working together and how inconvenient it can be when none of you know how to use GitHub. We also learned that it's never too soon to give up; we had no idea what to do going in, and though we faced a few speed bumps, we are very proud of our end result.
What's next for Paths2Education
We want to add a discussion form for users to share their experiences about alternative education and career opportunities. We also want to make the website more responsive and interactive.
