Inspiration

We were inspired by life simulation games and the ongoing conversation around gender equality. We wanted to build something that goes beyond awareness and actually puts you in someone else's shoes. The hackathon theme of flipping the script pushed us to ask: what does it feel like to navigate a world that was not built equally for everyone?

What it does

Paths is a text-based life simulation game where your gender shapes the paths available to you. Starting at age 16, you make real life decisions across education, career, relationships and family. Society quietly influences which options are open to you, reflecting how the real world works. At the end, Google Gemini generates a personalised summary of the life you built.

How we built it

We built the full game interface using Python and Tkinter as a desktop application, handling all screens, navigation and choice tracking. We integrated the Google Gemini API to collect every choice the player makes and generate a unique life summary at the end of each play through.

Challenges we ran into

We had a hard time incorporating the API to our code. We had to test out many API's as each of them had their own quirks.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we managed to make something unique in limited time.

What we learned

We learned how to work together as a team and if was our first time working with API.

What's next for Paths

More life stages, deeper branching paths, and expanding beyond gender to include race, class and background. We also want to make it web-based so anyone can play it.
