Inspiration
Our team's shared passion for battle arena games ignited the creation of PaperCraftVR. Drawing inspiration from popular tower defense games such as Bloons Tower Defense and CartoonWars, we saw an opportunity to innovate upon this well-loved formula. Our goal was to reinvent the genre, merging traditional gameplay with the immersive capabilities of VR technology.
Functionality
PaperCraftVR is a pioneering battle arena game where users engage in strategic warfare to seize the opponent's nexus. With a diverse selection of army units (ranging from melee to mage, tank to dragon), players plan, adapt and execute strategies to vanquish enemies and gain control of the game space.
Construction
The creation of PaperCraftVR involved an amalgamation of expertise from different areas. We began with a thorough ideation process, contemplating our unique selling proposition, potential user engagement, and critical development goals. Subsequently, we allocated tasks among the team: Nick and Mauricio tackled the intricate engineering aspects, Willy focused on user interface development and asset development, while Paul was responsible for game design, visuals, and product presentation.
Challenges
Implementing complex flocking mechanisms and waypoint selection posed significant challenges, especially when considering the AI's decision-making process. Moreover, harmonizing the skill levels and experiences within our team was demanding, yet ultimately strengthened our collaborative dynamics.
Achievements
Despite the stringent time frame, we're proud of our achievements:
- Real-time 3D map tracking, optimizing user experience in the VR environment.
- Dynamic object creation, granting users the liberty to generate game assets live.
- Innovative lasso and flocking mechanics, enhancing game strategy and interaction.
Learning Curve
This project offered invaluable lessons in Unity and C# programming, in particular the complexities of game development in a VR landscape. Our team emerged from this experience with a heightened understanding of technical proficiency and collaboration under pressure.
Future of PaperCraftVR
We envision a future where PaperCraftVR offers a more enriched gameplay experience with an expanded character roster, compelling lore, and enhanced user interfaces. Furthermore, we aim to empower users with custom creation tools, allowing personalized map design and digital asset imports. Eventually, we aspire to transition into Augmented Reality (AR), transforming PaperCraftVR into a tabletop game, thereby amplifying its immersive, tactile, and strategic appeal.
