Inspiration

One day, one of our team members needed a pad but realized she did not have any on her. It was the summer and there were not a lot of students on campus. She looked through 2 different buildings, twelve stories total, just to find one. This is just one of so many stories, from those who cannot afford it to those who forgot to bring one with them. It shouldn't have to be this stressful to find a product that fits a biological need.

What it does

All users can search for nearby places with free menstrual products as well as the trend of availability over the last week and users who are logged in can report whether a place is stocked with menstrual products or not. There is currently no dataset for finding menstrual products, and we hope that the data collected can help campus/non-profit organizations better stock bathrooms and improve accessibility to these products for people.

How we built it

We used Vite, React.js, Firebase, Firestore, and the Google Maps Api to build our project.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into issues with loading the map from the Google Maps Api. None of the team members have much experience with backend development, so we spent a lot of time troubleshooting these errors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that the maps finally loaded and we were able to add some functionality as well as a working sign in/up/out page.

What we learned

We learnt a lot about using React Hooks to manage data and the components from the Google Maps Api.

What's next for PadNews

We want to further flesh out the application using web scraping to search for more data as well as provide a commenting functionality to provide more data about the condition of the facilities.
