Inspiration

We started with the idea of a Carbon Footprint Calculator, however, we realized it won't really be applicable to the general public with regard to their daily life. This inspired us to take a closer look at our original challenge of reducing carbon emissions by finding a new metric that could successfully connect the average joe to the tools they needed to be an environmentally conscious citizen.

What it does

Our key functionalities include:

  • Determine the user's environmental impact as it compares to the rest of the average population through an analytical quiz.
  • Compiling information about consumables and daily habits that may or may not be harmful to the environment for the user.
  • Gamification of the user making progress towards being more environmentally conscious through a personal garden that expands with area based on progress towards their score, and adds aesthetic items (flowers, trees, etc.) based on recurring visits by the user.

How we built it

Primarily, we used Velo from Wix to build our web app because it was a very convenient platform for us to quickly develop using its javascript and database integrations. We were able to utilize dynamic web pages to connect users with multiple resources efficiently.

We also used Figma for our visualization animation, although there were challenges integrating it with Velo, it helped breathe life into the personal garden feature.

Challenges we ran into

The calculation of the user's environmental impact in the back end of the code was the most difficult aspect of the entire program. We were able to overcome this obstacle through multiple iterations of tracing and productive conversation reviewing the formula and pseudocode.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our dynamic island visualization as it provides a clear yet fun visual to further reinforce environmental consciousness. We're also very proud of our team's ability to adapt to a pivot in project ideas and successfully focus on our smaller scope and deliver a viable product.

What we learned

We learn about the importance of effectively assigning, deploying, and executing tasks. We also learned about time management as well as team collaboration. Our understanding of javascript and interacting with web apps (especially the Velo API) has dramatically increased.

What's next for PaCify

Our future steps will be further our gamified visualization, as well as include multi-user capability in which users could compete with their friends to be most environmentally conscious. We'd like to flesh out the profile page of the user by tracking their analytical quiz score history and daily streaks. We feel that our metric could be further honed and tuned given the time to perform more research about time-use activities and carbon emissions.
