Inspiration
Being a resident of Texas, I know that we have the largest population of residents without insurance. It hurts to see my community go without health services just because of the cost. A lot of it is because people don't know the ways to go about advocating to get health services that aren't over inflated. This all gave me inspiration to work on Pacem.
What it does
Pacem is a proposed app that helps people find the average cost of a healthcare service in your specific area. It also allows you to connect with others on forums about hospitals and specific health services. It is geared more towards those who don't have healthcare. It will do this through collecting the price data that users input for their health services, and then finding the average for ones location. It will also allow you to add health services on to it so you can see your total.
How we built it
Since, I was only competing in the Ideathon, I made a mock-up and Google slides. I made the mock-up through Figma. Since I intend for it to be an application not a website it is on an iPhone frame.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest thing that I wanted to incorporate into the proposed app was accessibility so to address aspects of accessibility I wanted to have the app be translatable into multiple languages, so having a language translation button would be very beneficial. Another aspect of this that I wanted was a simple user interface.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm proud of the research that I did for this project as it is one of the first projects that I did that combines finances and health. I am also proud of the user interface I designed, because I feel like the more I do the better I get.
What we learned
I learned a lot about how health insurance helps you with medical bills, and how errors can occur in medical bills. I always knew that medical billing errors where a thing but I did not realize just how often they occur, and how much of a difference you could make by negotiating your bill.
What's next for Pacem
The next thing for Pacem would be to start planning the code for the front end portion of the app. So basically turning the idea into an app. However, before starting to code it I would definitely need to put together a plan with what languages, and tools I will need to use to code it.
