Inspiration
Our inspiration came from the operational reality that cancellations and delays are often the result of small breakdowns, especially during maintenance turnarounds at busy hubs. When aircraft readiness updates are spread across radios, texts, and manual checks, even a minor communication gap can cascade into delayed departures, missed connections, and preventable cancellations. We built an AI-assisted maintenance ‘Overseer’ dashboard to centralize aircraft status, streamline crew coordination, and help supervisors allocate the right technicians to the right tasks faster and more reliably.
What it does
This app is an AI-powered maintenance dashboard that streamlines communication with American Airlines maintenance crews and someone as an ‘Overseer’ through a real-time updating dashboard for the crew members. The app provides functionality for ‘Overseers’ to easily view the readiness of the planes, delegate available crew members, verify maintenance crew assessments with a Gemini vision model API, while communicating with members in real time. Additionally, there is a feature that extends outside the maintenance of the plane to every terminal that must deliver luggage to and from baggage claims. A traffic view for luggage delivery. Someone given the role of ‘Eagle’ is automatically assigned to luggage with a high risk of being delayed or late. This predicts the probability of luggage making it on time or being at risk of missing the destination. Several tasks that could be overwhelming are simplified with AI-driven suggestions that create optimal plans for work distribution that balance work skill, specialization, and quantity to optimize for time.
How we built it
We developed this app through careful consideration of all features from ideation, and created careful illustrations of our desired product that could be easily implemented through agentic coding. Initially, Figma was used to visualize the crew dashboard, which was later refined through continuous iteration of each feature. Every feature plays a role in the bigger picture of optimizing and tracking maintenance and luggage delivery tasks across the whole airport. The entire system is integrated on a secure Supabase project, making it possible to be integrated into the industry at any moment with the highest security.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge we ran into was difficulties with real-time updates on our software; for example, delegating tasks wouldn’t instantly display the change in tasks on the dashboard initially. However, connecting our software with connection to Supabase enabled the use of instantaneous updates, which also proved useful in the chat features.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have developed a fully fledged system that could easily be implemented by American Airlines to streamline their operating efficiencies and improve the quality of life for their customers through the critical baggage risk system. The ability to not only delegate tasks to crew members but also visually see what is in need of maintenance with the 3D render of the aircraft and the color-coded parts that are being worked on will improve and streamline communication between the crew and the ‘Overseer’.
What we learned
We learned the correct workflow for distributing tasks for this project, which was distributing members to each feature and having them reconnect to the main dashboard. Communication plays a big part in not only delegating tasks for this project but also learning what holes there can be when it comes to maintaining a commercial aircraft. Learning the concepts of how damage tasks are given out and how the luggage from an aircraft gets delivered to baggage claim on time.
What's next for Overseer
We can see this being implemented in the future through simple edits that would make it possible for American Airlines to save customers from missing their flights and ensure a safety shield for tired maintenance staff.
