Inspiration

Our team loves game design/development, so we knew we needed to make games, but we didn't want it to be a compilation of unrelated games. We decided to make the website into a game itself with an overarching narrative, but we didn't want this narrative to present itself at first. We focused on a user experience, so that a visitor to the website wouldn't know that they were on a quest until after they played their first game, making them want to stay on the site. Ultimately, we hope that visitors are inspired to touch some grass after their experience playing all the games.

What it does

The website features 5 different games that take place in 5 different countries. After winning each game, the player receives a fragment of a final code. When they finish all the games and earn all the code fragments, they can use the code to open the chest, in which they will unlock the final ending and the prize at the end of the journey.

How we built it

Our team members used scratch to make the games. The website is hosted on Wix, which allows players to sign up to the website.

Challenges we ran into

Scratch was actually pretty complicated and tough for us to learn! It is easy to use to host games online, but we were surprised by how involved it was as a language.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We completed 5 minigames (mostly) and made a website! We felt that we finished quite a bit of work in such a short amount of time.

What we learned

How to make a background that scrolls (wow!) How to scale down our projects and our expectations for a hackathon setting.

What's next for Outside Games!

Who knows?
