We are currently producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic every year. Most of the plastic waste comes from single use products such as drinking cups and spoons. Of this plastic waste, more than 8 million tons are dumped into our oceans every year. The plastic that ends up in the oceans has a heavy toll on the animals. It also causes an increase in greenhouse gases.

The best way to fix the problem of plastic waste is through recycling. Recycling not only decreases waste through reusing of plastic, it also reduces the needs for raw materials.

Our website, “ourRecycle” aims to encourage people to recycle more through multiple features such as a recycling progress tracker, carbon footprint calculator, links to websites selling eco friendly products, and a recycling to do list.

When the website is first opened, the users are given the chance to sign into their account or to create a new account. An account allows for personalized recycling trackers and other features. Once the user either creates an account or logs into their account, they are then redirected to another part of the website. On this part of the website, they are allowed to click on one of the four different features.

The first feature can be used to calculate your carbon footprint. The carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the consumption of fossil fuels by a particular person.

The second feature that can be used to plan your everyday recycling. In this feature, there will be a list of tasks to do. There will be the option to select the tasks and mark them done once they are completed.

In the third feature in this website, you will be able to get points for the amount of plastic you saved. As you continue to build up points by recycling, you can compare your points to other website users.

The fourth part of this website correlates to the third part of the website. In the fourth part of the website, the user can track their progress in recycling plastic items such as cups and spoons.

Apart from these four features of the website, there is a part on the website where users can find alternatives to common household plastic items such as straws and utensils.

Overall, ourRecycle is a better and much more useful tool than the ones already out in the market because it not only helps users track their progress in recycling; it also provides them with information about non plastic alternatives.
