Inspiration

Every year, tourists collectively lose billions in unclaimed VAT refunds due to long queues, manual processing, and hidden fees. At the same time, businesses struggle with global payroll inefficiencies—high costs, delays, and compliance burdens.
We wanted to build a borderless, transparent, and AI-powered infrastructure that fixes both problems at once.

What it does

Orbix is an on-chain VAT refund and payroll infrastructure built on Aptos.

  • Tourists → Claim instant VAT refunds anytime, anywhere, without queues or delays.
  • Businesses → Process global payroll with low fees, AI-powered compliance, and real-time payouts.

✨ Result: Faster settlements, transparent audit trails, and borderless financial access.

How I built it

  • Blockchain Layer: Aptos Move smart contracts for secure, low-cost settlement.
  • Wallet Integration: Petra Wallet for authentication and fund transfers.
  • AI Automation: Google Gemini API for OCR-based invoice validation & compliance.
  • Backend: Supabase (database, auth, audit logs).
  • Frontend: React + Vite + TailwindCSS + ShadCN UI for modern dashboard.
  • APIs: FX and tax APIs for real-time exchange rates and regulations.

Challenges I ran into

  • Balancing refund logic & payroll logic in Move smart contracts.
  • Seamless AI + blockchain integration without latency.
  • Creating a beginner-friendly UX while staying wallet-native.
  • Managing compliance rules across different regions.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Built a prototype bridging VAT refunds + payroll on one chain.
  • Reduced refund settlement from 10+ days to near-instant with smart contracts.
  • Achieved a clean, intuitive wallet-native user experience.

What I learned

  • End-to-end integration of Move smart contracts with modern frontend stacks.
  • Using AI as a compliance enabler in finance workflows.
  • Designing scalable systems that still meet regulatory standards.
