about our project
For our 2021 MCH project we coded an emotional support bot to compete in the Social Good category. During the pandemic, especially for younger kids, it has become more and more challenging to verbalize emotion. Orb is designed to create a time in between the initial feeling of the emotion and the response and be the space where people can reflect and think about their emotions without verbalizing them. Orb is designed to benefit young children with basic reading and writing skills but can assist anyone. Orb chats with the user by asking a series of questions related to the past, present, and future as well as give you simple, quick coping methods and other helpful resources.
our process of the project
We used Replit.com using python to code our project. One challenge we faced was finding a project that accommodated our level/skills and interests. For both of us this was our first Hackathon. Being on somewhat different levels we struggled to find a project that was compatible with our level and interests. However, we collaborated well together and effectively communicated in order to reach one goal. We learned that time management and communication is crucial when working with a team. This is just the beginning. To make Orb more friendly usable for children, we will create Orb into a website or an App. We want our audience to feel personally connected when using Orb. A way we can do this is by implementing machine learning so Orb can learn from user’s data and grow smarter everyday. We would like to attend more hackathons in the future and expand our python skills and other computer science skills.
