Open Path

Inspiration:

Our team embarked on the Open Path project with a shared vision of creating a solution that addresses the challenges faced by individuals when navigating their surroundings. We were inspired by the need for inclusivity and accessibility in navigation, aiming to empower users with the information they need to make informed decisions about their routes. Witnessing the impact of discrimination and lack of resources in certain communities, we were driven to build a tool that promotes social justice and equality.

What We Learned:

Throughout the development journey, we learned valuable lessons about the power of technology to drive positive change. We delved into the intricacies of APIs, discovering how the integration of services like the Google Maps API and Amadeus Safe Place API can enhance the user experience. Our team gained a deeper understanding of geocoding, mapping functionalities, and data visualization techniques, expanding our skill set in web development and data analysis.

Building the Project:

Open Path was built using modern web technologies and frameworks. We chose React for its flexibility and component-based architecture, allowing us to create a dynamic and responsive user interface. By leveraging the Google Maps Extended Component Library, we seamlessly integrated Google Maps, providing users with familiar and intuitive navigation tools. Additionally, we utilized the Amadeus Safe Place API to retrieve safety scores, enabling users to make informed decisions about their routes.

Challenges Faced:

Building Open Path presented its share of challenges. One major hurdle was the integration of multiple APIs and ensuring seamless data flow between them. We had to carefully handle asynchronous operations, error handling, and API rate limits to deliver a reliable and responsive experience. Designing an intuitive user interface that prioritizes inclusivity and accessibility was also a significant challenge. We conducted extensive user testing and gathered feedback to iteratively refine the design and enhance user experience.

Despite the challenges, the journey of building this project has been immensely rewarding. It has reinforced our belief in the power of technology to drive positive change and create a more inclusive society. We are proud to present Open Path as a solution that empowers individuals to navigate their world with confidence, while promoting social justice and equality.
