Inspiration
As university students, we have all experienced large workloads, including MANY readings. Upon further research, university and college students are frustrated with the number of readings they're assigned, negatively impacting their comprehension of course content and motivation to learn. We wanted to create a solution that would help students complete their readings more effectively and efficiently.
We present ONTRACK for these students.
What it does
Listen to text helps students complete readings efficiently and effectively Students can easily listen to readings, documents, and articles being able to multi-task, adjust the speed at which it's spoken, and proofread their work out loud.
Stay on top of readings Our solution also includes a scheduling and goal setting feature where our system creates a schedule for users based on the amount of text users had to read and when they wanted to finish it by.
Summarize text The last feature allows users to easily extract the main idea of their readings with our summarization feature.
What led us to these design choices?
Blue was chosen as our primary colour because it represents trustworthiness and calmness. We wanted users to feel calm using our solution. We used a playful, yet modern font as well as a minimalistic UI to appeal to the modern tastes of university students. The interface is also similar to Google docs, as for many, it is a place of work. We wanted to emulate that experience with Ontrack.
How we built it 💻
We used react, node.js, express.js, mongoDB, and the Google text-to-speech API.
Challenges we ran into
React API Issues When we first started the app, we ran into a lot of issues with the overall styling of the web pages as we were unfamiliar with React libraries and material-UI libraries. However, over time we have been able to learn more about the different libraries and it has been smoother.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We implemented most of the UI decisions from the front with the designer.
What we learned
We learned a lot of new technical things that we didn't know before, to present our project.
Facing many errors towards in our project-making journey can't stop us. We can just somehow finish it and represent with some great features with a strong group and motivation to complete.
What's next for Ontrack
Obviously!! We had a lot of features in our mind and weren't able to add all the features in this short timespan. We have a plan to have an update document portion with generating new docs, a save document, add calendar with a reminder option, a slackbot- students can use easily, and collaborative features where students can make workspace to learn together if they want.
