Inspiration

We know that small steps add up, but it can be hard to find the motivation to take those small steps in order to be a more sustainable individual or know which steps to take. We made One Green Step in order to provide both information and motivation for people to start taking steps towards being sustainable, with the ultimate goal of shaping more environmentally conscious individuals.

What it does

One Green Step generates simple, accomplishable steps that the user can take, and tracks user progress through these steps in order to keep motivation for small sustainable actions.

How we built it

We coded a website using React and javascript, and then styled with CSS in order to have a nav bar with a home page that generated the challenges and a leaf gallery that tracked which challenges had already been completed.

Challenges we ran into

We initially wanted the tracker displaying which challenges had been completed to show a vine with leaves growing on it, with additional leaves growing for each challenge that had been completed, but we couldn't implement the vine in a way that we like aesthetically given our skills and time constraints. Instead of showing a vine, we pivoted to tracking completed challenges using a gallery of leaf images instead, which was much easier to implement. We also struggled to connect the challenge generator and the challenge tracker, and have the challenges display on the tracker after they were completed, but through some trial and error, we were able to figure it out.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our team is very new to hackathons, and we weren't familiar with React or git prior to QWER Hacks, so we're very proud of how we learned how to use React and git and complete a website we were satisfied with within the 24-hour time period.

What we learned

We learned how to use React and file control and sharing using git and GitHub.

What's next for One Green Step

If we were to continue this project, we would properly integrate generative AI so we didn't have a finite set of prompts, and incorporate a journaling aspect so users could log details on their steps towards being more environmentally conscious.
