Inspiration

We recognized that the major hinderances faced by NGOs was lack of funds, volunteers and reach. In this digital era, most NGOs lack the technical capabilities to face these hinderances. We, Team One Good have developed a website that uses technology as a bridge for NGOs to overcome these issues. We developed an NGO that not only helps other NGOs grow via acting as a common donation portal for a variety of sectors, but also one that educates donors about the initiatives and programs of these NGOs and helps NGOs grow and learn from each other by providing them with networking and growth opportunities. Our inspiration was as follows: Our team is composed of three individuals pursuing engineering from different institutes. Each time we meet and talk about our new projects, we learn something new or end up collaborating. With this fond memory in mind, we developed One Good Deed to not only serve as a donation portal, but also a portal that promotes community and allows NGOs to grow and learn from each other.

What it does

Today, there are various donation, and fundraising portals out there, but none provide these NGOs the networking capabilities to grow and sustain themselves. One Good Deed is a one stop portal that does that and more. We allow donors to choose from a plethora of NGOs in a variety of sectors. But, rather than overwhelming users with choices, we want donors to make informed decisions and educate themselves, in order to develop a greater connect to the initiative to which they donate. In order to achieve that, our website publishes monthly reports highlighting the distribution of funds from our portal to the various sectors, and further highlights the initiatives to date for the NGOs/sectors who have gained minimal funds in that month. Our primary aim for spotlighting these sectors is to give our NGO family an equitable chance to grow. THUS OUR WEBSITE HAS THREE AIMS: DONATE EDUCATE NETWORK We are NGO for NGOs

How we built it

We have used a remote MySQL server that stores our data. The connection between frontend and backend is done using PHP. For the frontend we have used HTML, JavaScript, CSS and Bootstrap. For designing gifs and carousels we have used Canva.

Challenges we ran into

Some of us were in different time zones, making it difficult to communicate, brainstorm and develop the website. Our team members are beginners in web development and are not well-versed in the back-end. Therefore, it was difficult for us to upload the NGO links in our database. One of our team members, Sakshi Mathur learnt mySQL and php for the same. She showed perseverance and determination while developing this new skill. Yash Mathur is new to web development and is still in the learning phase and has further developed his skills while working on this project. Tarini Madan is also new to web development, and this was her first time practically applying her web development skills. Yash and Tarini Madan were also introduced to a new tool figma during the development of this project. As beginners, we struggled with making the website responsive for all screen sizes, but towards the end were able to make it responsive for all views.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud, that the end result is a website that has a unique approach, and rather than only seeking aid, aims to make NGOs sustainable via creating a self-sustaining NGO community. The tagline 'The NGO for NGOs', perfectly suits our goal and vision.

What's next for One Good Deed

We are also planning to add data encryption in server side as it is vital for the NGOs and donors. The future roadmap elaborates the implementation of additional awareness programs led by NGOs aimed to educate both donors and different NGOs regarding exciting initiatives. We would also implement a intra-sector NGO communication portal aimed to allow collaboration and networking for NGOs.
