Inspiration

We wanted to help reduce food insecurity and food waste among individuals as thousands of restaurants throw millions of pounds of perfectly good food away as it doesn't seem "fresh" anymore. Connecting these restaurants with people suffering from food insecurity allows them to obtain food at a lower price, while allowing restaurants to be more sustainable in the process.

What it does

On-D-Go is a web application that allows anyone to by restaurant-quality dishes to participating restaurants at a greatly discounted price. Restaurants can fill in a form that describes the dish, original and reduced price, and add any tags for people with dietary restrictions. The user can then choose any restaurants from the list and determine the location to go to to buy food!

How we built it

We built On-D-Go using React and Node.

Challenges we ran into

We were stuck with deciding whether or not we wanted to build an iOS app for On-D-Go as it was a relatively new skillset to learn, or stick with what we were more comfortable with and develop a website for On-D-Go instead. After figuring out the pros and cons to each side, we ended up deciding to develop a website for On-D-Go.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Because our team has a majority of first time hackers, submitting a project is an accomplishment of itself.

What we learned

We learned just how long it can take to develop a website, especially with two different types of users using our platform to communicate with each other. There were different nuances for each webpage as the user experiences varied from restaurant to customer. Within the team, one of our members learned how to design a logo and create mockups using Sketch while another one of our members learned how to use a React.js framework to develop this website during TreeHacks.

What's next for On-D-Go

On-D-Go is a starting point for us as we'll continue to find the best sustainability practices between businesses and users. We hope to continue this project to implement more of our ideas that didn't initially make it to the website.
