Inspiration
We have chosen sustainability, especially in the textile industry as our topic for the hackathon. Around 85% of all textiles thrown away in US – roughly 13 million tons in 2017 – are either dumped into landfill or burnt. By 2030, we are expected as a whole to be discarding more than 134 million tons of textiles a year resulting in a tremendous amount of pollution. We are a group of students who have realized that this can be a huge threat, especially to our mother Earth. What we wish is to practice the culture of reusing the clothes to its lifetime capacity rather than having them been seen as a hazardous waste. If the textile goes back to the earth and does not end up in landfills, it will create lesser wastage. So in order to create an eco-friendly waste less environment, we decided to take up this project.
What it does
The project is basically an application for promoting sustainable development in the textile industry. This application provides a platform for customers all over the world to come and buy products which are recycled into sweaters, tops, bags, accessories at an affordable and reasonable price. This app provides a stage for several activities. Customer can buy products or even sell DIY’S(do it yourself) , thus enhancing and promoting entrepreneurship among budding business men/women. It also allows customers to showcase their creativity and innovations by posting their products on our platform. Annual DIY contests will also be held, where the winner gets surprising presents and gift vouchers. This will provide a motivation for customers to buy recycled clothes more often. Tutorials will also be provided by professionals to make DIY products as well. This app would be a huge step towards achieving sustainability especially in the textile industry.
How we built it
First, through various brainstorming and online meetings we gave our idea a basic structure. Then we divided the work among each other, some dealt with the coding part of the app, some writing the contents. We made a prototype of the app using a software called Figma and we all worked on it and made necessary changes. We used Google Meet for carrying out brainstorming meetings. Constant Communication made this project possible.
Challenges we ran into
As we were beginners, it did consume a whole lot of time to learn the basics of app development using flutter. Even if the idea and its workflow are ready, it would still take up enough time, work and knowledge for the model to be functional.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We gained considerable knowledge of app development using flutter in such a short span of time. For a few of our teammates, this was their first hackathon and the experience was great. We started off knowing nothing and now we sure have made ourselves proud by gaining some knowledge on app development and employing it in our project.
What we learned
The things we learnt were innumerable. We never thought that we could learn in such a short time. Firstly, we learnt the basics of app development using flutter and got to work on this project using this technology. The experience of working remotely as a team was fascinating and gave a lot of insights.
What's next for OMNIS1
We wish to carry out this initiative on a larger scale. We hope that MNC’s could provide us funds to buy machinery which could transform old clothes into brand new ones at an affordable price and within a stipulated time. Advancements in technology will surely help us to make this leap. By doing this we ensure a future with sustainability
