Inspiration

Every year, hundreds of migrants die crossing the Sahara on their route to Europe. This is a humanitarian disaster that is underreported in the news, and we would like to bring awareness to the plight of these migrants.

What it Does

Oasis is a simulation game that will take you through the Sahara from the perspective of a migrant. Along the way you will face a myriad of events that may help you journey safely or might result in absolute disaster for you and your fellow travelers.

How we Built it

We found some 2D sprites, and drew animations for them on Paint 3D. We imported them as assets into Unity. We then wrote the front/backend scripts for the game in C#.

Challenges we Ran Into

We ran into the issue of all of us having varying skill levels and having to work together. However we were rather inspired by the idea that a leader should lead by doing, not by bossing others around. Drawing the Sprites also ate up significantly more time than we anticipated.

Accomplishments That we're Proud of

We are very proud that we all worked with each other and not against each other. Even though we all brought something a little bit different to the table, None of us felt out of place on the team. We all worked towards our own strengths, and we were also very persistent when troubles came.

What we Learned

We learned quite a bit about teamwork. When the project began, we all came from varying backgrounds and experiences but we were able to persevere through any issues. Perseverance and teamwork are two irreplicable qualities in the world of programming, and we were very glad that we improved both of those skills.

What's Next for Oasis

We would like to expand Oasis to be used in smartphones as an app. We would also like to expand it to Sub Saharan Africa where technology is spreading rapidly, and it can be used as an educational tool for those who are considering the journey.
