Inspiration

Many people want to eat healthier food, but healthy eating is often seen as expensive, inaccessible, or not the smartest choice when they other dietary plans. I(Jagruth) experienced this myself when trying to improve my diet to support my fitness goals. With my family saving money for future expenses such as college, I didn't want to buy a completely new set of foods or follow expensive meal plans.

This inspired me to create NutriSnap, a tool that helps users find affordable healthy food options and generate meal plans that fit within their budget.

What it does

NutriSnap helps users eat healthier without exceeding their food budget. The platform displays nearby stores, affordable food options, and estimated prices, allowing users to make informed purchasing decisions.

Users can explore available foods, compare costs between stores, and build meal plans that stay within a specified budget. The goal is to make healthy eating more accessible for families, students, and individuals living in areas with limited food options.

How we built it

We built NutriSnap as a web application using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Our coding experience is primarily in non web related languages, so we used AI development tools to help me make the website.

We used a combination of ChatGPT and Gemini. Gemini helped generate the initial user interface, while ChatGPT helped with functionality and debugging.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was translating our original design vision into a working interface. The initial generated layouts often didn't match the designs we made, requiring multiple iterations and adjustments.

Another challenge was learning web development concepts while simultaneously building the project. Since our experience was primarily in non web related languages, we had to quickly learn how the web works and how to deploy the project online.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we successfully turned an idea inspired by a real-world problem into a fully deployed web application, despite having limited web development experience. We were able to build, refine, and publish a functional product that shows how technology can help people make healthier food choices on a budget.

We're also proud of learning new technologies, deploying the application through GitHub and Vercel, and creating a project that helps people facing financial constraints.

What we learned

With this project, we learned the basics of web development, including frontend design, version control with GitHub, and hosting with Vercel.

What's next for NutriSanp

We're thinking future versions of NutriSnap will include AI-powered meal planning that generates personalized recommendations based on a user's budget, dietary preferences, and nutritional goals.

We also plan to integrate real store and pricing data, improve the nutrition analysis system, and expand support for users.
