SDG Community Platform

Inspiration

Our team was inspired by the global commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but noticed a significant gap between awareness and active participation. While many people understand the importance of these goals, they often struggle to find tangible ways to contribute or connect with others working toward the same objectives. We recognized that creating a community-driven platform could transform passive support into meaningful action by enabling knowledge sharing and collaboration across diverse stakeholders.

What it does

Our SDG Community Platform is an interactive website that brings the Sustainable Development Goals to life through community engagement. For each of the 17 SDGs, the platform provides:

  • A dedicated discussion section where users can share their experiences, initiatives, and ideas
  • The ability for users to post about their own contributions to specific goals
  • A like feature to highlight particularly valuable or inspiring contributions
  • Clear information about each goal's objectives and importance
  • A user-friendly interface that encourages participation across different knowledge levels
  • An inclusive space that connects individuals, organizations, educators, and policymakers

The platform transforms abstract global goals into concrete conversations and shared experiences, making sustainable development more accessible and actionable for everyone.

How we built it

We developed our platform using fundamental web technologies to ensure maximum accessibility:

  • HTML5 for structure and content organization
  • CSS3 for responsive styling that works across devices
  • Vanilla JavaScript for interactive features without heavy frameworks
  • Mobile-first design principles for universal accessibility
  • Semantic markup for improved accessibility and SEO
  • Local storage for basic persistence of user interactions
  • Security measures including input validation and HTML escaping

Our development process prioritized simplicity and performance, ensuring the platform remains accessible even in regions with limited internet connectivity or older devices.

Challenges we ran into

Building the SDG Community Platform presented several challenges:
