Potential Uses
Since the goals are to support students facing mental health issues due to high school pressure and aid environmental sustainability initiatives, potential uses include encouraging students to access this project to see how they have been feeling for the last few days to get assistance and working with clubs and/or courses.
Inspiration
The main source of inspiration for NurtureNet was reading about and seeing people have hurtful things happen to them because of mental health and environmental topics. Real statistics can say a lot about this topic. There is more in common than some might think, and that is how this solution materialized.
What It Does
NutureNet has a sign-up/log-in page and three key features. This includes tracking a user's self-inputted mood over multiple days, giving a user tips to help the environment, and encouraging a user to practice sustainability by getting involved in local projects.
How I Built It
HTML for web app code; CSS for styling; JavaScript for functionality; Being tested on Live Server. The main logic was held in the JavaScript file which had multiple methods for the project to perform various actions.
Challenges I Ran Into
Initially, a challenge was getting the front-end and back-end to efficiently work with each other. My skills in HTML and CSS aren't perfect, so I sometimes needed to refer to documentation, but this was good practice and it worked out in the end. I also wanted to add a couple of more features and clean up the UI, but that can be done in the future.
Accomplishments That I Am Proud Of
The project did the main features it was supposed to and I was able to sharpen some of my programming skills. Also, NatureNet applies to more than one "field".
What I Learned
I learned that takes a good idea to implement a strong project that is creative and can be widely impactful. More on the technical side, I learned more ways to customize UI using HTML and CSS.
What's Next For NurtureNet
Future work includes: implementing more secure authentication, connecting to school clubs and courses, adding a “check-in” feature where users can talk to a system or others with ML/AI (ML: train on a dataset to better assist the user | AI: chatbot format), and communicating with organizations of events that provide a positive environmental initiative for students who are experiencing these problems.
