Inspiration:
One of our team members volunteered at a local shelter and noticed that several homeless shelters were capable of a lot more than their current state. A network to connect the homeless to these shelters will really help boost the efficiency of these shelters.
What it does
Nurture will help homeless people find homeless shelters and the services they offer allowing the homeless to find shelters to best suit their needs.
How we built it:
We used flask and firebase for the backend and used react, bootstrap, and leaflet for the front end. All data is stored in a real-time firebase database.
Challenges we ran into:
Storing the data in specific formats and retrieving it proved to be a great challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
We were able to make a full website, and we think it is a great achievement
What we learned
This project has provided exposure to all of us about the flask API and also a lot of knowledge about backend databases. Through practical use and experience, we had several takeaways throughout this project.
What's next for nurture:
We want nurture to be a full-fledged application, which we believe is definitely possible. The time constraints limited our implementation of ideas. Some improvements we would like to make are a better authentication system apart from just using a database, a feature to find the distance of a shelter from the current user's location, etc.
