Inspiration
A team member's friend recently ran into a challenge when he moved and realized he needed to transfer his medical documents from the old doctor to a new hospital for his father to continue his medical treatment without much delay; however, communication between the two hospital took longer than expected, This story helped me realize that if patients had access to their medical records or lab test results (such as a blood report) on an online portal, it would help deliver doctors deliver faster care to patients and also allow patients to have greater access over their medical files.
What it does
NOVA allows healthcare facilities to keep keep track of patient records digitally using blockchain for extra security. NOVA's specialty lies in addressing how in the past decade more than 176 million patient records have been compromised in security breaches--that's nearly 50% of America's population! Using IOT, hospitals would be able to upload patient records directly to a patient's profile as a blockchain transaction and within seconds the patient would be able to view their medical records online and/or transfer them to another healthcare facility.
How we built it
Because most members of the team are doing a Hackathon for the first time(!), the team decided to present a proof of concept first, and if time permits, attempt to create a working version of the website using React. Our first step was to use a method known as rapid-prototyping to create quick concepts in 10 to 15 minutes; once these concepts were finished, we would present them to Hackathon mentors there to help us in order to get feedback on our project. After a couple rapid-prototyping sessions, we developed a solid proof of concept and began improving it and trying to create a realistic version of the web app.
Challenges we ran into
Since conception, our team's journey together in the Hackathon has been blocky, with a member dropping out on the first day due to being called in for a work emergency. Another member's computer also got bricked on the first day, leading to him being unavailable for the majority of the hackathon. As half of our team consisted of collegiate freshmen, we were inexperienced and had to learn to learn quickly and self study. Using React and GitHub was a new experience, but rewarding as we slowly got used to it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of being able to work together with a diverse team of unique talents to bring together a cohesive proof of concept. Another accomplishment we are proud of is integrating Auth0 into our working login button while we attempted to turn our proof of concept into a working web app, as it was the first time I had used React and/or GitHub or coded in JavaScript.
What we learned
We learned that such apps have much more complexities behind them than meets the eye. Our team gained a lot of insight into React and JavaScript, as well as working remotely with a team online. In addition, a majority of our team members learned how to hack in a Hackathon! Our first hackathon was definitely memorable and taught us much about the intricacies present in the creation of a working project.
What's next for NOVA
In the future, there are multiple possible addons for NOVA. Our very first addon if we had more time would be to develop NOVA into a working Web App. So far, our team only managed to integrate a Auth0 to make a Log In/Log Out screen. We would want to finish developing and integrating the UI and possibly turn it into an App which the user could download on their phones. Another function we thought of implementing was a Medicinal-to-Vernacular AI which would, if asked to by a patient, translate the medical terms and explain them to the patient online. (For example, if a patient was classified as Overweight by the BMI scale, this AI would explain that BMI stood for Body Mass Index, show an example of the BMI scale and scan the document for other possible medical relations to the patient and their results.
