Inspiration
The inspiration to build nourishED arose from a genuine concern for student well-being and a desire to provide accessible, practical solutions to combat food insecurity. By combining resources, advice, and technology, nourishED strives to make a meaningful impact on the lives of students, ensuring they have the knowledge, tools, and support needed to lead healthier, nourished lives.
Understanding the significance of informed decision-making when it comes to food choices, the concept of the food nutrition search emerged. To further assist students in their meal planning and cooking endeavors, the advice section was developed. The Meal Tracker feature was conceived as a means to foster self-awareness and promote healthy eating habits. Lastly, the inclusion of the To-Do List feature recognizes the importance of organization and planning in maintaining a consistent and nutritious diet.
What it does
With a clear mission to combat food insecurity among students, nourishED provides a comprehensive platform where students can access resources, advice, and nutritious meal options tailored to their unique needs. The food nutrition search allows students to effortlessly track and access valuable nutritional information for the foods they consume, enabling them to make educated decisions that align with their well-being. NourishED's advice section provides students with a range of ideas, tips, and tricks to help them plan and prepare wholesome meals. By allowing students to log their meals and track the timing of their consumption, nourishED's Meal Tracker helps them gain insights into their eating patterns and make positive adjustments as needed. By facilitating the tracking of grocery lists and meal plans for the future, nourishED's to-do list supports students in staying focused, prepared, and on track with their nutritional goals.
How I built it
I used HTML and CSS for the front-end, and for the back-end, I used Javascript. I also used Edamam's nutrition analysis API. All the coding was done on Replit and linked to Github.
Challenges we ran into
Completing this project in 48 hours was challenging for me. I rushed to make the video at the end. I was unable to add voiceover to the video. There were several other things that I wanted to add but time caught up.
Accomplishments that I am proud of and What I learnt
I take great pride in accomplishing this project entirely on my own within a tight deadline of 48 hours. It was a new experience for me, as I had to handle every aspect independently. Throughout the process, I encountered various challenges and had to acquire new skills. One of the key areas where I expanded my knowledge was using GitHub which I hadn't used before. Incorporating APIs into the website was another unfamiliar territory for me, but I embraced the opportunity to learn. I spent time understanding how to integrate external services and leverage their functionality to enhance the user experience.
Moreover, my journey with this project introduced me to JavaScript coding. While I hadn't previously worked extensively with JavaScript, I dedicated myself to learning the language from scratch. I explored its syntax, concepts, and best practices, enabling me to implement interactive features and dynamic functionalities on the website.
Overall, this experience has been immensely rewarding. Not only did I successfully complete the project within the given timeframe, but I also acquired valuable skills and expanded my knowledge base in areas such as GitHub, APIs, and JavaScript.
What's next for nourishED
I want to connect the Meal Tracker to the nutrition analysis, so that it shows the meals you have eaten and their nutritional data. I also want to add a weekly meal planner with the to do list.
