Inspiration
In 2021, 10.2 percent of U.S. households, totaling a staggering 13.5 million families, struggled with food insecurity. Shockingly, this figure remained almost identical to the 10.5 percent recorded in 2020. These numbers are a stark reminder of a deeply rooted problem within our society.
Nourish Neighbor aims to minimize food waste while connecting individuals to easily accessible food and vital resources. Our vision is rooted in the belief that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, deserves access to nourishing meals and fundamental necessities.
Nourish Neighbor is not just about technology; it's about compassion, community, and sustainability. By leveraging our digital platform, we can bridge the gap between surplus food and those in need.
What it does
Users are promoted to a map that contains markers showcasing posts that other users and organization post about left-over food or hygienic items they don't want to waste. Our platform gives user the ability to both share and discover valuable resources in their vicinity. Though it's a work in progress, here's how it works: When users contribute to the platform, they provide details such as the location of the surplus food or products, as well as the keywords that categorize the resources into food, hygiene, or other categories.
How we built it
Front-end:
- HTML/CSS
- BootStrap Framework
- JavaScript
Back-end:
- Flask
- sqlite
API'S:
- Google Maps API
Challenges we ran into
As a lot of our team was using a variety of new technology we were not familiar with it was challenging to get idea we were hoping for to full functionality. It was a lot of the team's first time handing branching in Git, so we had to resolve a variety of merge conflicts. Furthermore, the time limitation made it difficult
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Integration: We take pride in the connection we've achieved between our back-end and front-end components.
Successful Login Page: Crafting a fully functional login page was a significant milestone for us. It provides a key feature for our users.
Diverse Functionality: We're delighted with the variety of successful buttons and features we've implemented.
Google Maps Integration: One of our standout accomplishments is the full functionality of the Google Maps API. This feature enhances our users' ability to locate and share resources effectively.
What we learned
We learned a lot about Git, back-end, and front-end development of a website. Aside from the technology aspect we learned how to work on a innovate idea under time constraints and managing everyone's roles. Our journey proved that teamwork is the key to turning dreams into reality. Together, we've not only enhanced our technical skills but also nurtured collaboration.
What's next for Nourish Neighbor
In the feature we hope to improve Nourish Neighbor's user experience. We also hope to hosting Nourish Neighbor as an app rather than a web application. Furthermore, we want to add features for users adding images to their post and having filtering functionally through the search button based on food near them, keywords, etc. Lastly, we were not able to focus a lot on design, so we would love to make Nourish Neighbors UI/UX design into a reality.
