Noodle

Inspiration

Every child is an artist; they just need a hand bringing their big ideas to life. Noodle uses AI as a creative companion—not a replacement—to help kids turn their wildest imaginations into their own hand-drawn masterpieces.

What it does

Noodle is an AI-powered drawing buddy for kids ages 4–6. It lets children draw on an iPad or laptop while an AI companion watches, listens to the child's voice inputs, and encourages the child while asking open-ended questions that encourage more creation. The AI suggests creative ideas, builds stories around their drawings, and motivates them to add details, turning simple scribbles into imaginative adventures.

How we built it

We built Noodle as a web-based iPad app using React and Fabric.js for the digital canvas. Computer vision analyzes drawings in real time, while ElevenLabs generates age-appropriate prompts and story suggestions. ElevenLabs provides natural, kid-friendly voice responses. Gemini and FastAPI handles backend processing and AI interactions.

Challenges we ran into

Designing AI interaction for pre-literate children was difficult. Ensuring responses were safe, encouraging, and not overly directive required careful prompt engineering.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created an experience that genuinely feels like a creative companion rather than a tool. The AI reacts contextually to drawings and can keep kids engaged without overwhelming them. We’re especially proud of the friendly voice system and the way the app promotes imagination instead of automating art.

What we learned

We learned how important pacing and tone are when designing AI for children. Too many prompts can disrupt creativity, while too few reduce engagement. We also gained experience integrating multimodal AI, vision, language, and voice into a seamless real-time application optimized for tablets and laptops.

What's next for Noodle

Next, we plan to add more guided story modes, personalized progress tracking, and collaborative features for parents and teachers. We want to expand accessibility options, improve offline support, and introduce more AI buddies with unique personalities, turning Noodle into a long-term creative learning platform.
